A Data Center Should Always Have The Power
To keep the flow of information unimpeded at a data center requires constant connectivity of course. There are a few other items that need to be constants in the data center infrastructure so that there is something to connect to!
A working data center has to first and foremost keep the servers lit up. No Power, No Business, for anyone involved in a no power scenario, especially the data center owners. The billing machine stops cold along with all your clients business, so we can say power is tantamount to business. Cooling and data support are equally important of course, in fact every nook and cranny in a well run data center is important and critical, but with out power it all fails together.
To guarantee continuous operation, best practice in a data center calls for access to dual redundant high-capacity power supplies. No matter how your battery racks get charged, a rotating live floating system driving the inverter and regulator banks should be backed up with a second bank of batteries, inverters and regulators.
Of course the system keeping the batteries charged should also be duplicated so the odds will be in the data centers favor. So if there’s one diesel generator waiting in the wings, there should be two. Aside from switching in the floating battery banks for live testing, the diesel generators should be fired up and actually tested in the in use position on a regular basis.
