In the UK, both residential and business electricity customers can select their supplier. This deregulation occurred in the early 1990’s. Today, the UK business electricity market is dominated by six energy suppliers dubbed the “Big 6”. These business electricity suppliers are British Gas, EDF, Eon, Npower, Scottish and Southern Energy and Scottish Power.

Between them, they provide energy service to 98% of the UK homes and businesses. There are smaller suppliers as well. These smaller suppliers typically specialize in green electricity, ethical electricity, or they specialize in certain regions of the UK. Unfortunately for these smaller, independent business electricity suppliers, they have very little of the available market.

The six major business electricity suppliers all have websites where they offer quotes to businesses, special tariffs, and offers to entice businesses to switch suppliers. The supplier a business is switching to will typically assist with the switching process. These websites make it simple for businesses to comparison shop for the cheapest business electricity and the best tariffs. Businesses whose current contract is ending can either negotiate with their current electricity supplier or go online and get quotes from all the major suppliers.

As the competition among the business electricity suppliers increases, business users could see offers for new competitive online tariffs which will give them more choices and better rates.
